l The city of New Delhi, with a population of 14 million, will be the host of Commonwealth Games 2010. This will be the first time India will host the Commonwealth Games and the second time in Asia.
l Delhi won the right to host the 2010 Games by defeating the Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 at the CGF General Assembly held in Montego Bay in November 2003.
l The Commonwealth Games are to be held in following disciplines: Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Net Ball, Shooting, Squash, Rugby 7”s Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
Changing face of Delhi
A new state-of-the-art Games Village is being built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) with a focus on maximising athlete comfort. The village will be developed along the east bank of the River Yamuna. The site is off the National Highway 24 adjacent to the Akshardham temple at the Noida intersection. Exceeding CGF requirements, the Village will translate traditional Indian hospitality into standards of comfort & excellence never seen before by participating teams. To be created at a cost of USD 230.7 million (including Residential Zone), the Games Village will be spread over an area of 63.5 hectare (158.4 acre).
World Class Games Village
l The new state-of-the-art Games Village is being planned around maximising athlete comfort. The services and facilities will have a unique "athlete-comfort" orientation and approach.
l The Village will translate traditional Indian hospitality into standards of comfort & excellence never seen before by participating teams.
l Within its immediate vicinity are heritage monuments and historical landmarks. Combined with the dense green natural cover on the sides, it will be a relaxing and soothing environment for the athletes and officials. Athletes and Officials from all sports will stay at this one village.
Roads & Transport
Addition of new arterial and approach roads to improve intra-city transport and decongestion of all National Highways at Delhi’s entry points from its neighbouring states.
l Road Improvement Plan for 52 identified roads
Construction of nine new subways and improvement projects for existing ones (flooring, illuminations, signage, toilets, escalators etc).

Work is undergoing at a rapid speed and Metro Rail Corporation is confident to complete its task before the due date.
Airports
Modernization of the international airport with increased capacity to host flights.
Ø The new terminal will give the airport a capacity of 37 million passengers a year. The new terminal will have road access via a new six lane road from NH-8 and will also have a high-speed metro line to the city (metro line (Delhi Airport rail link) with special city check-in facilities. There will also be an integrated multi-storey car park at the terminal
Hospitality Services
Planning and building five-star hotels and the country’s largest world-class convention centre.

Medical Facilities
l The Delhi government has decided to construct 36 hospitals in New Delhi, in the run-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
l Some of these hi-tech hospitals will be built in the Trans-Yamuna area of DelhiInitially a fund of Rs.150 million has been planned for the construction of the hospitals, but more funds will be made available as and when needed.
l The Delhi government has decided to construct 36 hospitals in New Delhi, in the run-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

l Its horticulture department has sown 41,000 species of plants at Roshanara Bagh which are likely to flower during the Games period.
l Some of the trees being grown by the MCD include Plumeria Alba, Plumeria Acutifolia, Lagerstromia Flosreginae, Colvillea Racemosa, Bougainvillea, Hisbiscus, Lantana, Cassia alata, Jatropha, Neem, Ashoka tree etc. It also plans to sow five lakh plants and shrubs so that they are ready by then.
