Today, we know tobacco use is the single largest leading cause of preventable diseases and WHO declare it as a pandemic in 2006.
India is the largest producer as well as consumer of tobacco in the world.
Tobacco Burden in India: Review of Literature in high impact journal show that disease causes thirty lakh death chronic observation lung disease and asthma 14.8 lakh death and cancer ten lakh deaths (3000 every day).
Issues: Ten percent of the world smokers and eighty percent of the world chewers are Indians eighty percent of the tobacco related death will be in developing countries in twenty first century and fifty percent of the worlds children are exposed to second hand smoke.
There are twenty five crore tobacco users out of these forty four percent are beedi smokers ten lakh people are employed in the beedi industry and 20,000 to 25,000 of them are children .
Employment in then tobacco chewing industry is not know, the bulk of it being in the unorganized sector.
Global Tobacco Burden: According to WHO in the 20th century ,tobacco killed 100 million and 21st century it will kill one billion .current annual deaths from tobacco are 5.4 million and estimated annual deaths in 2020 would be developing countries.
A cigarate is the only consumer product which when used kill its consumer. Human beings are the only species that inhale poisons in to their lungs voluntary that calls for their death in sprite of being nature’s most superior creation.
Lastely, may I ask, can we control the epidemic. would like to think “yes we can” if we work hard collectively we have achieved success in IT space atomic energy why not in health the future is in your hands ,we can rise to meet the challenge.
